Jew Town is a historic neighborhood in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. It is home to a small community of Cochin Jews also known as malabar Jews or Kochinim (Yehudey Kochin - i didnt know this - thanks Wikipedia), who are the oldest group of Jews in India with roots that are claimed to date back to the time of King Solomon. Today, the area is a popular tourist destination for its rich cultural heritage and collection of antique shops. Apparently, there are more Kochinim in Israel than in Kochi now a days.
The neighborhood is located in the Mattancherry area of Kochi and is easily accessible by road. Visitors can explore the narrow streets and alleys of the neighborhood, which are lined with shops selling antiques, textiles, and handicrafts. Jew Town also features a number of historic sites, including the Paradesi Synagogue, which is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations.
In addition to the Paradesi Synagogue, visitors to Jew Town can visit the Dutch Palace, which is a 16th-century palace that was once the residence of the Maharaja of Kochi. The palace features a collection of historic artifacts, including murals and paintings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. They are a bit difficult about taking photographs inside. Phone shots only.
Jew Town Kochi is known for its many antique shops, including some that showcase Jewish remnants and heritage of the area. However, like any tourist spots, when dealing with shops and vendors, be aware of scams or of being overcharged. They price you not the antiques.
Other popular attractions in the area include the St. Francis Church, which is the oldest European church in India, and the Chinese Fishing Nets, which are a unique form of fishing that is only found in Kochi.
Overall, Jew Town is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history and culture. Its unique blend of Jewish, Indian, and colonial influences make it a fascinating and memorable place to explore.
